Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge Press

A great story by by Joe Becker of KGWSports in Portland about the upcoming action this weekend:

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Some of the top riders in the world are in town for the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge this weekend.

“It should be a highlight for our spectators and an exciting race,” said Charlie Warner, the race promoter. “They might be distracted by the Tour de France now, which is kind of like a big chess match, where as this is more like an exciting video game. You know, you get action and different kinds of action every five or six minutes.”

One of the riders leading the way is 30-year-old Canadian Travis Smith. He is the number one sprinter in the world and has an eye on the 2012 Olympic Games.

NCS Standings After Hellyers' TVC

Some great racing out at Hellyer Park Velodrome's Testarossa Velodrome Challenge(TVC) saw new track records and new leaders in several categories of ATRA's National Championship Series.

In the Men's competition the top 3 overall in the NCS standings each scored 10 points each. Project London's Kevin Mansker took the outright lead in the competition, spurred on by his track record breaking 200m ride of 10.73s of which he is now the co-holder of that record with Jimmy Watkins also of the Project London team. Jumping up 2 spots to claim second place is Mansker's teammate Michael Blatchford. Both of those riders are heading up the Spritn standings ahead of Alexander Gil. Third place in the overall standings is currently held by Zachary Kovalcik who used the event to jump up 3 spots, and also move into second spot in the Endurance standings behind Franco Marvulli. Jame Carney had a field day at the TVC scoring 22 points all in Endurance events to move into 3rd in the Endurance standings.

Some great racing by Cristin Walker(Momentum Coaching pb Atomic) allowed her to take the lead in the overall competition and solidify her lead in the Sprint competition. She leapfrogged previous leader Lauren Robertson who held onto second position with Val Brostrom holding steady in third position. No other major changes to the womens standings at the head of affairs, and with no points on offer for women at this weekends event in Atlanta, the standings won't change until the series heads to the Alpenrose Challenge.

This coming weekend the series heads to Atlanta, GA to the Dick Lane Velodrome for Outback Bikes presents 'The Omnium'. Following the trek to the DLV the series will head to Portland, OR for the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge.
