Day One of Matrix Track Cup

The first day of the Matrix Track Cup presented by Richardson Bike Mart is in the books after a night of exciting racing under what turned out to be fine weather conditions in Frisco, Texas. Andrew Armstrong, riding for host club Matrix/RBM sits on top of the leaderboard of the International-Style Omnium standings on the strength of three top-3 finishes. Alexander Gil (Nitroshot) of Hialeah, Florida parlayed a victory in the Elimination Race to move into a one-point lead ahead of Armstrong in the overall ATRA National Championship Series Standings.

On the Women's side, Suzie Goodwin (Frisco Cycling Club) and Lauren Robertson (Bicycles Plus) are tied on points in both the weekend omnium and the ATRA NCS points. Goodwin holds the tiebreaker edge on the Omnium due to an edge in the first time-trial event, the Flying (250m) Lap, which she won to start the evening. Robertson currently holds the tiebreaker in the ATRA series by virtue of winning the last two races of the night.

Joseph Lacour won the Mens Flying Lap with a time of 14.588 and rebounded from a seventh place in the points race to take 4th in the elimination – good enough for 12 total points and a second place standing in the omnium. Mat Stephens (Bicycles Plus) finished second in the Elimination Race to move up into 3rd place for the omnium. The two riders currently sit third and fourth respectively in the ATRA NCS. Erin Popovich (Matrix/Richardson Bike Mart) used a 2nd place finish in the Flying Lap to help secure a third place spot in both the Women's Omnium and the ATRA NCS standings heading into Sunday.

The Elite Level racers were not the only ones enjoying the evening. Afton Shelton won a pair of races in the evening session, and Will Rader won a total of five races during two sessions of racing. Jake Boone swept three races in Men's Category 3. Other race winners in the afternoon Juniors session were Sebastian York (3 races) and Nick Torraca. Masters winners included Robert Bodamer, Dan Tinklepaugh, Ted Kicey, Sean Price, and Kurt Bickel.

The Matrix Track Cup wraps up Sunday May 22 at Frisco Superdrome.
